One can never be completely certain what Mother Nature will produce. As a weather nerd and wannabe meteorologist I will steadfastly defend the meteorological community while correcting anyone who unfairly besmirches it and believes we have “no idea” what the conditions will be on any given day. Advances in knowledge and technology have allowed us to predict hurricanes, snowstorms, and even tornado outbreaks well in advance to save countless lives. July Sunset

Here are a couple sunset photos from last night at Stratford Point as we were on duty providing some fireworks coverage here in Stratford, Milford and West Haven for the Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds. You can see the reef balls in the distance along our dune and spartina growth in the intertidal zone. Tree Swallow

How have your Tree Swallow and Eastern Bluebird nest boxes fared this season? It is getting warm out there, and I hope most of the young have successfully fledged. We are already at the point of the year where barbed wire fences and power lines are being filled with swallows of various types as they fledge, disperse and begin to gather before fall migration. It is tough to find the stars in very populated areas such as coastal Connecticut with light pollution drowning everything out, including the Milky Way. Still, you can find a hint of it in this recent photo on a moonless night. At this time of year it can be more beautiful to be outside at night than during some hot days – be sure you get outdoors whenever you can! Keep an eye out for bats, moths, amphibians, mammals…life is going 24 hours a day.
