Stratford Point in September
Here is the end of summer at Stratford Point, looking west towards the lighthouse and out into Long Island Sound near sunset. It was a hot, dry and extremely busy season, and a very successful one for some of our waterbirds including the Piping Plover and American Oystercatcher as the former may have neared the all-time record for fledged birds that we set only last year at 116! Our work in the Audubon Alliance for Coastal Waterbirds undoubtedly did help an all-time record number of Piping Plover pairs attempt to nest in 2015. This has been the hottest September on record thus far for many locations in the Northeast. The sultry and arid conditions have worsened a drought for much of the region. The blazing sunset here may be one of the last hot days of the year as today’s cold front should bring much more seasonable conditions for the week, albeit still a little above average in terms of temperature and far below average for precipitation in the near future. Things are heating up! We are near the hottest part of the calendar year, and this week will be another warm one in the Northeast. I think this should be called a cotton candy sky, gorgeous and delicious for eyes. It is the setting sun to the west lighting up clouds of distant showers and thunderstorms. If we are going to have hot and sticky weather we might as well get some precipitation benefit from it to keep our lands lush, green and full of life.
