Come see this exhibition which includes original works from the books How to Know the Birds (1949), Wild America (1955), and The Bird Watcher’s Anthology (1957). Many of these extraordinary pieces have never been seen by the general public until now.

I love this very recent Throwback Thursday image from three days ago taken in space of the Blizzard of 2015 via NOAA/NASA. Having the state lines drawn in makes it very easy to identify locations based on night lights – for those in Chautauqua County you can see Jamestown and Dunkirk/Fredonia quite clearly along with other nearby cities. Isn’t it astonishing how bright New York City is even while covered by clouds? Here’s a Throwback Thursday of a different sort – five woodpeckers from the Birds of Newfoundland by Roger Tory Peterson. Can you identify them all? Clockwise from the top we have the Downy Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Black-backed Woodpecker. If you are fortunate enough to have a yard where you can see them all that would be extremely impressive!

Throwback Thursday – Roger Tory Peterson with one of his exquisite woodpecker plates as taken by Noble Proctor. Can you identify the birds? I’ve seen all three! Maybe the last one was not living…you can find the Red-headed Woodpecker uncommonly in a few locations Western New York and the Pileated Woodpecker in areas of sizable mature forests. The Ivory-billed Woodpecker is in RTPI’s collection along with several other now extinct species.
