There have been a lot of bright pink autumn leaves to go along with the lemon yellow painted on the trees during this fall foliage season. The past week has yielded some gorgeous October weather. If you look a little closer you may end up seeing something other than a leaf flying off in the breeze – that is a Yellow-rumped Warbler flitting between the trees, one of millions on the move right now. Say goodbye to the green leaves because the last of them seem to be leaving the Northeast this week! Some of our oaks and the later changing tree species will be hanging on a bit more, but the colors are really popping now…here, there and everywhere.

These Tree Swallows are hurriedly heading to the south as freezing temperatures take away their prey. Aerial insectivores really have to keep it moving and find sheltered spots that can maintain an insect population despite frigid weather conditions if they are not on the immediate coast or at large bodies of water. We still have some time before it becomes a real problem, but flocks of hundreds of birds had better keep on migrating. It certainly isn’t getting any easier.

We will see you next year, Great Egret! The long-legged waders are on the way out, including the Great Blue Herons that may still be found in some places in our area come winter. More and more we do see Great Egrets and Snowy Egrets attempting to overwinter in warming regions, or at an artificially temperate location like a power plant or a water treatment facility. This cold snap definitely moved a lot of them out, though.
