American Pipit (Anthus rubescens) in HD

Right now the migrating American Pipit (Anthus rubescens) can be found on farms and fields in areas such as Chautauqua County to the shores of Lake Erie or the Atlantic Coast. You may see one individual or you may see dozens. This HD video shows how much they as a species enjoy bobbing their tails. It may be a “drab” bird due to its preference for open areas but it certainly has an understated zest.

Severe hail in Jamestown

Turn up the volume on this one! Here’s Twan’s yard being deluged with hail during last evening’s severe thunderstorm. There are a bunch of very large stones that come down in the middle of the video especially. Most break and begin to melt by the later post-storm time Twan took the photos in the earlier post today but it is obvious some are around golf ball size.

Common Terns feeding young

We are getting to the hungry season with young birds of all sorts begging for food from their busy and tired parents. You have probably seen this happening in your yard for a couple of months. We are now into the season for waterbirds like the Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) to be doing the same. Check out this video of a juvenile Common Tern begging for more even after an adult delivers a sizable meal! The squeaky wheel, it turns out, does indeed get the grease. Or the fish.
