RTPI to host “Guy Coheleach: Wildlife in Art”

The Board of Trustees of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute is pleased to host Guy Coheleach’s acclaimed traveling exhibition for the fall and winter season, beginning Friday, October 11th.  Featuring more than forty original works, the exhibition includes several new pieces created by the artist in the last five years.  RTPI has previously hosted solo exhibitions of Coheleach’s work in 1997, 2003 and 2008. Wild America: Know Your Wild Neighbors

Roger Tory Peterson’s Wild America Nature Festival (July 28 & 29 at Panama Rocks) was created to help strengthen our emotional connection to the natural world and to facilitate understanding and respect for the many fascinating creatures with which we share our planet. At a time when ever fewer people are spending time immersed in nature, it is more important than ever to open our eyes, minds, and hearts to nature, and to address misconceptions and behaviors that too often put our wild neighbors in peril. Harlequin Duck at Stratford Point

Today we were fortunate enough to host a drake Harlequin Duck (Histrionicus histrionicus) at Stratford Point as found by our friend Tom Murray. I took the below photo in the later afternoon during a brief moment when the sun came out from behind the clouds. Isn’t it adorable? I saw this baby skunk earlier this week, and it reminded me to put out a brief message about the many miniature mammals we see emerging as we head into summer. While they are so very cute, we want to treat...

Yellow-headed Blackbird

Here is a bird you do not see too often around these parts – the Yellow-headed Blackbird! This immature male, found a few weeks ago by Stefan Martin, should ordinarily not be farther east than Illinois or Wisconsin. However, it took a wrong turn during migration and ended up all the way on the Atlantic Coast with us at Stratford Point, CT. He has been hanging out with Common Grackles, Red-winged Blackbirds, and Brown-headed Cowbirds while feeding on seed we put out plus whatever insects it can find. The bird has started singing, too, perching on various trees, snags, wires, and shrubs...
