RTPI is committed to increasing awareness of our region’s natural history. We strive to promote environmental literacy and stewardship; we aspire to inspire the next generation of nature artists, educators, and naturalists. In 2015, RTPI started the “Project Wild America (PWA) Youth Ambassador” program as a platform to engage local youth in such efforts. Each summer since, high school and college aged students assist RTPI staff in researching the area’s biodiversity, open young kids’ eyes to the wonders of nature through engaging children’s programming, and convey positive environmental stewardship messages, gained through first-hand experience, to area residents, policy makers, and visitors. This program provides area youth with relevant job experience and professional training and allows them to explore local nature much like Roger Tory Peterson did, more than a century ago.
