Getting Squirrely

Things got a little squirrely in Philadelphia last night! What was that Wild America I was talking about? It’s hard to get much more American than baseball and wilder than a squirrel on the loose in a packed stadium. Here’s hoping this one found its way back to the streets after finding a few tasty treats. As usual an unexpected animal at a baseball game is a crowd pleasure, and something the fans always root for. Your browser does not support iframes. Bobcat Signs

Can you spot the mammal here? No? Well…yes, you cannot find it because it is not there, but it has left its mark…literally. What do you see? This is a Bobcat scratching post and resting area, the bark stripped away by sharp claws. You can see the lines that have been carved into the wood. It is conveniently located over a pool of water, making it harder for anything to sneak up on the bobcat when it is at rest. Eastern Chipmunk (Tamias striatus) saying hello

Oh, hello there, Eastern Chipmunk (Tamias striatus). It seems as if there is nothing to see here, yes? The poor little thing was frozen in place while we had a staring contest. I was the first one who blinked, moving ever so slightly, and it dashed back off behind the tree. I hope it did not think it was invisible until then. Either way it was a very cute moment in November nature. I wish it the best for winter season and hope it has a large cache of food to snack on between naps. Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween! I do not have any cute kids in costumes so I thought I would share my Shetland Sheepdog, Zach, looking the most serious he ever has in his life. That playful boy will be three years old next week and he is a hardcore birder, conservationist and biologist. He was raised as a puppy on hawk watching, waterbird monitoring and waterfowl hazing. He learned to always look up and enjoys watching doves flying around the neighborhood, sparrows scratching at the grass, ducks and geese swimming offshore, gulls feeding on the rocks and raptors screeching by. He has a heck of a life list...

Severe hail Jamestown yard

Here are a few photos of Twan’s yard in the aftermath of the severe thunderstorm that hit the Jamestown area last evening. The hail was enough to leave dents in Twan’s car! It had very localized intense and dangerous conditions with some folks having this severe hail, others gaining an inch or two more of rain on top of one to two inches already had by most, some with stronger gusts of wind or more lightning than others. Later tonight I will post a video of this hail dumping down from the sky. Early August in the Northeast is a busy time for severe weather in recent years in my...
