Alberto Rey’s Extinct Birds Project is comprised of a somber, beautiful exhibition showcasing his original paintings depicting the study skins of 18 now extinct bird species, and a companion publication which examines the collecting practices, causes for extinction, and politics of categorizing endangered birds. In addition to the poignant oil paintings which comprise the Extinct Birds Project exhibition, Alberto Rey created a series of watercolor illustrations for the companion publication by the same name. RTPI invites you to join us for a screening of “From Billions To None: The Passenger Pigeon’s Flight To Extinction” on November 8. The screening, sponsored by JCC’s Earth Awareness Club and sustainability committee in collaboration with RTPI, begins at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. RTPI to Feature Alberto Rey’s “Extinct Birds Project” Exhibition this Fall

RTPI is pleased to present artist Alberto Rey’s Extinct Birds Project exhibition this fall. The new exhibit will be featured at RTPI from August 17th – December 14th and will include 18 original works by the artist. The Project also includes a new book by Rey, along with programming in partnership with RTPI. Are we sure Monk Parakeets aren’t native? They certainly look right at home sometimes…and they often make me think of the extinct Carolina Parakeet that we never had the opportunity to see outside of a drawer in the RTPI archives. We as naturalists and conservationists must be working hard every single day so that our currently threatened species do not end up solely as parts of museum collections. Snowy Egret Saved

There is no doubt that the Migratory Bird Treaty Act saved the Snowy Egret (Egretta thula) from extinction. Beautiful plumes of feathers from these gorgeous birds were so desired that they were hunted to the brink of annihilation. What other birds will be so threatened if the Migratory Bird Treaty Act is so weakened?
