The Blinded Sphinx moth (Paonias excaecata) has a cool name and an even more radical look. It can appear to be a dead leaf…or a very frightening dead leaf when exposing the “eyes” on the underwings.

Those eyes… those stunningly beautiful eyes…. I know that by now it is becoming pretty hard to appreciate the beauty of the pesky bugs that can make your stroll in the woods less than enjoyable. If you can muster the energy to look before you swat, check out their beautifully diverse patterns and colors. Most biting deer and horse flies can be identified by the unique pattern and coloration of their large compound eyes. Sometimes it takes a different perspective and a close look to truly appreciate the little gems around us (and some gritting of teeth in this particular case)....

We have some Snowy Owls sticking around for the long haul, especially near water – even the mostly frozen Lake Erie. This Snowy was at the Chautauqua County/Dunkirk Airport on February 3, 2014 and beautifully photographed by Twan in some light snow. You can even see tiny flakes accumulating around its bright yellow eyes!
