I love this very recent Throwback Thursday image from three days ago taken in space of the Blizzard of 2015 via NOAA/NASA. Having the state lines drawn in makes it very easy to identify locations based on night lights – for those in Chautauqua County you can see Jamestown and Dunkirk/Fredonia quite clearly along with other nearby cities. Teaching the teachers – SUNY Fredonia

Making and reading maps in an outdoor setting is fun and educational as SUNY Fredonia students in the Early Childhood Integrated Teaching Methods course discovered at the SUNY College Lodge in Brocton on August 27 when RTPI staff took over the class. They learned how simple maps of shapes drawn in the sand of the volleyball court can teach geometric shapes. Turning their maps into treasure maps demonstrated how maps can be used as a lesson in spatial awareness. Here’s RTPI Conservation Technician Elyse Henshaw checking for Hemlock Woolly Adelgid on an Eastern Hemlock tree (Tsuga canadensis) yesterday at the College Lodge. Our staff is currently conducting a year-long plant and wildlife assessment of the approximately 200-acre property owned and operated by the Faculty Student Association of SUNY Fredonia.
