Update on RTPI’s Winter Phone Cell Tour

For some, snow is simply a burden. But for myself (and I’m sure there are others!), snow brings a positive change in attitude. Hearing Christmas music for a month straight doesn’t necessarily put me in a celebratory mood, but a blanket of snow illuminated by colorful lights and accompanied by a quiet stillness that seems to intensify as every flake descends really gets me into the holiday spirit. Along these lines, snow also gets me excited for outdoor recreation opportunities and for being able to enjoy the landscape with a completely different view. It also draws countless...

Start of a New Season

Happy 1st day of winter everyone! Today marks the first day of a hopefully snow-filled season as well as the official beginning of the snowmobiling season. Remember before hitting the trails on your snowmobile, skis or snowshoes to grab your cell phone so that you can explore the many fascinating stories waiting to be told through the “Nature at Your Fingertips” cell phone tour. Nature Will Soon Be at Your Fingertips!

For me, it’s exciting to see those little snow clouds pop up on your weather app as well as the banner associated with lake effect snow warnings, like what we have right now for Chautauqua County. After a long year under the influence of a strong El Nino, it will be a welcomed relief to see its effects diminish while the influence of a forecasted La Nina is expected to move in. The area’s local businesses, organizations and outdoor enthusiasts could certainly benefit from some augmented snowfall this upcoming winter season. If you stop and think about it, its rather amazing that...

Stormy Skies

This late astronomical fall and early meteorological winter has felt a little different than last year’s El Niño conditions to say the least. We are seeing and feeling far more typical weather rather than the much above average temperatures the previous season yielded. Here is a picture of Stratford Point from my archives showing a very stormy sky near sunset in the middle of winter with a fair amount of snow on the ground. How much snow are you looking for this season? We may get plenty across the Northeast and Great Lakes, and that is good news for our “Nature at Your Fingertips”...

RTPI at the Mayville Snowmobile Show

This year marks the fourth iteration of RTPI’s “Nature at Your Fingertips” cell phone tour! Once again we are working closely with the snowmobile clubs of Chautauqua County to make this project happen, and our friends at Orbitist have added several new features to the platform making it even easier to navigate through the county’s many unique stories and landmarks. Come see these new features and a demonstration of how it all works this weekend at the Mayville Snowmobile Show hosted by the Chautauqua Suites Meeting and Expo Center and 3 Seas Recreation at Chautauqua Suites. Stop by the...
