Double-banded Grass-veneer Moth
This looks to be a Double-banded Grass-veneer moth (Crambus agitatellus), and I thank it for leaving the grass to provide these easier views. When you are walking through some lawn or short grass and see tiny moths kick up briefly from the ground they are often grass-veneer species like this one that were hiding on long blades out of your sight. If something like this can go so easily unnoticed what else are we missing in the natural world around us? Always be observing! Scott Kruitbosch Conservation & Outreach Coordinator

Check out the video evidence of this Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) family growing up and all the more red! Taken at the second and more hidden entrance to their den, you can even see them teething on some of the branches covering it up! So cute it hurts.

We are now entering May with far warmer weather and much more cooperative conditions for young mammals to grow and explore, learning about their environment and all within it. After Elyse tossed up some photos of her own Red Fox kits, I knew I had to answer back with another volley of photos from “my” family. In case you missed them previously here they are at a very young age. I also took some shots of a couple of the little pups having some play time, wrestling around and practicing their “ferocious” predator skills on one another. This fox family, far more...

Would you be interested in watching young Red Fox kits wrestling? Do you want to see adorable pups in battle training? How do you like fluffy little cubs biting and attempting to “kill” one another? If so, you’re in luck! As in previous Red Fox postings I shot these through a window from afar for the safety of the competitors as well as the photographer (and this would never happen if they could see me!)… Everything these little ones do is precisely what a litter of your pet puppies would do, and they all seem to have their distinct personalities. That tiny one looked...

It did not take long for the very young Red Fox pups from this family to start exploring their surroundings a bit more. I took these photos in the early morning through glass once again while the environment was still and peaceful, allowing it to wander a bit. Immediately before this jaunt I had seen mom at the entrance to the den in the grasslands appearing to nurse a total of six little ones. All sorts of adventures are afoot for this fluffy one!
