Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele)

The Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele) butterfly is a neighbor we have all probably seen flying through our yards or gardens at some point. If you’re fortunate you may see them frequently but I doubt you have ever seen one like this – I certainly have not! Look at the unbelievable level of detail on the intricately patterned wings. It’s quite the spectacle when their chatter heats up – note the different frequencies and patterns that different species and individuals use to communicate. Even though is not quite the 4th of July yet, beautiful evening light shows are in full swing right in your backyard!
