Hawk Walk
Last Saturday the Aspetuck Land Trust held its second fall “hawk walk” of the season at the Trout Brook Valley Conservation Area in Easton/Weston, Connecticut. I tagged along to help find some birds and talk about the wonderful land, wearing my hat for both RTPI and as a member of the Aspetuck Land Trust Land Management Committee. It is becoming more and more apparent that what pollinators need are more of their plants, and without chemicals! The Monarch butterfly needs milkweed like this in fields and grasslands across America. If you have open space like this please try to do your best to keep them unmowed, unpolluted and full of milkweed plants next year. Manicured and toxic lawns are wastelands for our insects.

Here we have field, farm and forest all in one shot on a hot but beautiful August afternoon. This green scene has changed dramatically already with the recent drought in parts of the Northeast wilting plants and turning some leaves to brown or yellow this September. Perhaps the last few days of rainfall will help. Nevertheless, fall foliage may be earlier this year and a little different than usual.
