Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus) record shot between gulls

Normally I crop the photos that I take and show to everyone here on RTPI’s website and social media, but in this case I liked the framing of the raw photograph. Can you see that dot in the middle? Even if this record shot were cropped you would not be able to see much more of the Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus) flying out over Long Island Sound from last weekend’s Christmas Bird Count in Stratford, Connecticut. Sand in your face

Let’s be honest, we’ve all been here before! You’re trying to relax on the beach but all you get is a face full of sand as the wind shoots it at you with both ferocity and persistence. Taken before this chilly and snowy week the gull pictured toughed it out and, I like to think, pretended this patch was a tropical paradise. Tomorrow should feel more like the tropics, too! Ring-billed Gull in the low sun

Winter is coming. This Ring-billed Gull’s face is illuminated by a low sun as our days are becoming shorter and shorter. Are you ready to feel the coming season in this week’s weather? Snow and frigid temperatures, in relative terms for mid-November, are on the way as waterways freeze even faster than last year. Lake Superior has ice supposedly a full 10 days ahead of fall 2013. Glaucous Gull (Larus hyperboreus) by Twan Leenders

How did your first day of birding go in 2014? Twan had a few cool sightings yesterday in Chautauqua County while checking out some local hotspots. At Barcelona Harbor in Westfield on Lake Erie he picked out this Glaucous Gull (Larus hyperboreus) that he noted dwarfs the Ring-billed Gull (Larus delawarensis) that is next to it and even closer to his camera.
