In honor of Wild America Wednesday, we thought it would be appropriate to celebrate another successful year of RTPI’s Project Wild America (PWA) Youth Ambassadors Program! Beginning in 2015, PWA began with a small group of ambitious students ready to roll up their sleeves and get dirty as they got acquainted with the Chadakoin River and the surrounding urban ecosystem within the City of Jamestown. This summer our building underwent a lot of changes in order to accommodate the fabulous Art and the Animal exhibit. New panels for the library, fixed up pedestals, lots of spackle and a coating of fresh paint on all the walls made the building look fresh and ready for all the beautiful paintings and sculptures. Since the close of the exhibit, the pieces selected for the tour have since been shipped to the next venue and the building is being prepared once again for a new exhibit. It’s not every day that we do photo shoots with organisms that have been dead for any length of time; however, on occasion the preserved bird skins in the Peterson collection still get a bit of use even though some of the birds themselves have been dead for over a hundred years, and their species extinct for decades. Many of the bird skins that lay in their likely final resting spot here at RTPI were part of Roger Tory Peterson’s collection that he used for reference while painting each species for his field guides. Here’s a sneak peek of our brand new signs, printed by our friends at 360 Graphics, for our new cell phone tour entitled, “In the Footsteps of Roger Tory Peterson.” This cell phone tour will have fifteen stops scattered around the Jamestown area, highlighting the childhood of RTP and the area where he was first inspired by nature and a life-long career devoted to art, conservation and education was jump-started.
