Field Sparrow
The Field Sparrow (Spizella pusilla) is an underrated little bird! Look at that bold eye ring and those beautiful brown tones with a pretty pink bill. Whenever I see those Fields in numbers in October it always suggests we are nearing the end of autumn avian migration. If we are lucky we may be able to spot one or two overwintering in the region, perhaps on a Christmas Bird Count, but most will be seeking less snowy quarters so they can enjoy easy to reach seeds all winter long. The fields are alive with the sound of music…and in this case it was the voices of many Field Sparrows (Spizella pusilla) singing on territory in the grasslands and open country across the region. Let’s all focus on keeping our open habitats healthy and available for birds like this! Development and unchecked regrowth of forests without natural wildfires will all but eliminate them otherwise while invasives, monocultures or chemicals can degrade them further. Why do they call them Field Sparrows again? Oh, right. Way to blend in! It appears to be simply a more mobile assemblage of some brown blades of grass…late sparrow migrants are still on the move, so keep an eye out for them along with Vesper Sparrows and all those Dark-eyed Juncos and White-throated Sparrows.

This Field Sparrow (Spizella pusilla) actually flew directly towards me and my dog to perch on this white pine branch this morning. It looked us over for a minute and then went back to snacking. It is another great example of a lovely bird that we can still find even in the..uh, cold days of November? Here are some more seasonal shots to get you into the fall mood – a Field Sparrow (Spizella pusilla) from a couple of days ago during a busy migration time for the species. They will pass through the eastern U.S. in good numbers in the autumn with some staying into the winter if they find an acceptable field or other open space with plenty of seeds.
