Beach Trash

This photo and information via one of our colleagues, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Shorebird Technician Audrey Wiese: “PLEASE dispose of your trash properly! This is the amount of trash I collected on ONE beach after only 3 hours! If you bring trash in take it out, if you buy plastic water bottles or balloons dispose of them PROPERLY! Loose trash on a beach does nothing for us and has a lasting effect on OUR environment and the animals that live in it.” That doesn’t seem like a very happy birthday to me…and congratulations to the grad as you help pollute the world...

Raccoon Patrol

Please keep your trash indoors or inside something! Even this yard waste in paper bags was attractive to the Raccoon (Procyon lotor) seen here as it wondered if there were any scrumptious snacks in what is sometimes a human sack of treats. Raccoons can be seen in the day if they are particularly busy looking to feed growing young, but we should never intentionally or unintentionally provide food for mammals at our homes. That is how they become problem individuals, sometimes aggressively looking at the helpful hosts to keep the meals coming. The Raccoon seen here seems healthy in appearance...

More recyclable plastic

I can still remember when we first got the “blue bin” to toss recyclable materials in every other week when I was a child in Connecticut. It could only take plastics labeled #1 or #2 plus cans and bottles, then newspapers, then all sorts of paper, and so on. Now you can even recycle these plastic newspaper bags by bringing them to stores! It is a long road but we are finally getting to a point where nearly everything we use can be used again for another purpose or entirely recycled.
