Close-banded Yellowhorn

Here we have what looks to be a Close-banded Yellowhorn (Colocasia propinquilinea) moth, one of a few dozen species that I enjoyed seeing while mothing this weekend. I will be sharing moths all spring, summer, and fall, in part to honor one of young Roger Tory Peterson’s hobbies, and something that helped foster his passion for the natural world in our Wild America. This pastime is as easy as turning on an outside light at night and seeing what shows up. Relaxing Kit

Right after I mentioned I had been having trouble seeing and photographing any of my Red Fox kits one decided it wanted to cooperate! These were taken Tuesday afternoon. It even decided to have a snack at his feeders…what a treat for him! As you can see he also had an American Goldfinch friend, and this Gray Catbird hopped up for some suet. I am beyond jealous…have you had such a cooperative Indigo Bunting? Now all he needs is a Painted Bunting to complete his set. Our homes, feeders and yards are a “Wild America” all their own each spring! Scott...

Roger Tory Peterson Tour at Home

For Throwback Thursday here is the view from the front of Roger Tory Peterson’s Jamestown home. You can also see a sign with a young Roger for our new cell phone tour called, “In the Footsteps of Roger Tory Peterson.” The mobile tour has fifteen stops scattered around the Jamestown area, highlighting Roger’s childhood and other locations where he was first inspired by nature, portraying how he began a lifelong career devoted to art, conservation and education. This is part of a project being developed by RTPI – the “Wild America” Cell Phone Tours – that allows people...
