Autumn shades at RTPI

Here are a few photos of some of the bluest of blue sky you can see mixed with clouds over RTPI yesterday afternoon, all set above the slowly changing colors. We are seeing some yellow and orange fall foliage starting to pop in the immediate Jamestown area, conquering the remaining green. This week should yield an explosion of vibrant autumn shades. Butter butt season

We are now in the prime time for the butter butts: Yellow-rumped Warblers (Setophaga coronata). When you cannot see their behind they certainly look rather plain in October, like this individual. Nevertheless they are still a joy to watch pouring through our lands in sizable flocks and that distinctive flash of yellow we inevitably see is a reminder of the cold air on its way.

Flower Crab Spiders (Misumena vatia)

Flower Crab Spiders (Misumena vatia) are common in temperate zones throughout the northern hemisphere, but they are not easily seen. Even when photographed up close, Meet Your Neighbours-style, they still simply vanish in their natural habitat. Due to their ability to change color between yellow and white (by either incorporating or excreting a yellow pigment into their outer cell layer, respectively) they manage to create the perfect shade of camouflage make-up to blend in with white or yellow flowers in your backyard.
