Lightning Rainbow

Here’s a thunderstorm from earlier this week with orange, pink, purple, white and blue lightning – it may not be all the colors of the rainbow, but it is still pretty good, huh? Natural nature art is the best. Go enjoy some this weekend.

Thunderstorm

One reason we did not have severe thunderstorms locally at Stratford Point on Sunday night was because of this severe thunderstorm to the north in the late afternoon. It likely took some of our energy, and it was pushing out air towards us, cooling things down and then blocking the sun for a while. Combined with other factors like drier air working in thanks to the cold front we lost some of our massive instability. This is right before the sun went behind the clouds from the thunderhead. You can see rain coming down from the ground under the anvil looking NW/N from near the main...

Severe Thunderstorms

I spent most of yesterday at Stratford Point, arriving at the tail end of the Connecticut Ornithological Association Shorebird Identification Seminar as the group wrapped up a walk and moved indoors. It was a dangerously hot day with an excessive heat warning and unbelievable tropical-feeling dew points. Pleasure Beach Teaching

Pleasure Beach teaching continues as the Bridgeport WildLife Guards are really reaching the people heading to the shore these hot summer days during the height of vacation season. A varied audience of fishermen, beachgoers and sunbathers, families and children, and naturalists are all interacting with our crew by taking brochures about birds like the American Oystercatcher or Piping Plover, signing the Be A Good Egg pledge to help protect waterbirds on our beaches, or enjoying some of the hands-on activities the Guards have to offer. Let’s take a look… Amazingly there are only a...

WildLife Guards Planting & Removing

The Bridgeport WildLife Guards do even more than educate beachgoers about the wildlife around us or conduct avian surveys on the shore as they, like the Project Wild America Youth Ambassadors, get hands-on with our local habitats. The Guards recently came to Stratford Point for the day in order to help enhance and maintain the increasingly spectacular site as upland habitats are completely overhauled with a focus on benefiting migratory songbirds and various pollinator species. They planted everything from butterfly weed to serviceberry while removing non-native invasive species such as...
