Harlequin Duck

Come on, this is getting ridiculous – Harley, our drake Harlequin Duck at Stratford Point, looks absolutely stupendous with his nearly completed beautiful blue plumage. The blue water really brings out his tones even more. Please stay with us for the winter, Harley! We think he will be off to find a hen, or at least some other members of his own species, once his molt is complete, but we have our fingers crossed that he has enjoyed his time with us and may consider sticking around. In all seriousness a bird like this is an inspirational one in that it brings in all sorts of non-birders...

Blatchley Walkingstick (Manomera blatchleyi)

RTPI Affiliate Sean Graesser, with some help from his ever so knowledgeable about walking sticks research partner Tyler Christensen, identified this as a Blatchley Walkingstick (Manomera blatchleyi) female. Sean said it was always a highlight to find these creatures during the summer as a child, but this was a new species for him. Wildlife can be unreal!

While I have not posted too many moths lately, I have kept on mothing, as a young Roger Tory Peterson did, throughout the summer. It is time consuming to go through the photos that I take of what I find at my lights, especially when trying to identify eight or ten or more new species.
